John Schaaf, 85, a former Havre resident and City of Havre employee, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at a Hettinger, N.D., care center.
Funeral services were held Nov. 8, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hettinger, N.D., with Father John Mathai officiating. Interment was held at the Hettinger Cemetery.
Schaaf was born March 19, 1914, at Richardton, N.D., to Phillip and Monica (Renner) Schaaf. He grew up in the Richardton and Reeder, N.D., areas. He attended mechanical school and did carpenter work.
On June 23, 1962, he married Mary Schmaltz at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hettinger, N.D. The couple resided in Havre where he was employed for the City of Havre. They later moved to West Virginia to live with a niece.
After the death of his wife in 1998, he was a resident of the Hillcrest Care Center.
Schaaf enjoyed playing pool and listening to music. He also enjoyed dancing particularly waltzes and polkas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Anna, two brothers, Paul and Peter and sisters, Monica, Margaret, Pauline, Catherine and Frances.
Survivors include brothers-in-law, Chris Schmaltz of Hettinger, N.D., and Wendlin Schmaltz of Lakewood, Colo.; sisters-in-law, Marguerite Schmaltz of Hettinger, N.D., Sister Georgine Schmaltz of Yankton, S.D., Marry Coons and Rose Tatro of North St. Paul, Minn., Marietta Coons of Minnetonka, Minn. and Monica Ness of Hyattsville, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Evanson Jensen Funeral Home of Hettinger, N.D., was in charge of arrangements.
