ALMIRA BREVICK
CHESTER -- Almira Charlotte Hunt Shettel Brevick, 95, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at a Chester hospital.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Chester United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Chester Cemetery.
Brevick was born May 17, 1904, near Vilas, S.D., to Martha Alma Beddow and Wallace Alton Bruce Hunt. The Hunt's farmed in South Dakota and later homesteaded near the Canadian border north of Joplin. She attended the North Star Country School. She finished her formal education in Joplin. In the few years that followed, she helped her parents with the farming operations.
On Nov. 9, 1933, she married Jacob Levi Shettel in Shelby. The couple resided on a farm east of Chester. He died in 1969. She remained on the farm until 1970, then moved to Chester.
On Dec. 19, 1970, she married Sever I. Brevick. The couple resided in Chester and were divorced in 1987.
Brevick was involved in the Shriner's organization supporting the Shriner's Children's Hospital. She sold Shriner Circus tickets for 25 years and chaperoned on the bus to the circus. In 1975, she was elected to membership in the Daughters of the Nile, Sapphira Temple No. 9 of Helena. In 1984, she was initiated into the Social Order of the Beauceant, Shelby Assembly #95. She helped in the writing of the Liberty County "Heritage" book and worked in the early organization of the Liberty County Museum. For the past 50 years she had written news articles for the Liberty County Times. In recent years she had a column in the Times called "Here and There." In addition she was a life member of the Farmers Union, holding several offices and was a loyal attender of meetings and conventions. She was a baptized member of the United Methodist Church, a past church council member, and a dedicated worker at the annual church rummage sales and other events. She voted in every election, including school elections for the past 71 years.
Her hobbies included cooking, reading, letter-writing, collecting commemorative liquor bottles, doing artex painting, traveling and telling stories. She also enjoyed sewing. In her younger years she enjoyed playing cards, dancing and riding horses. She took pilot lessons in the early 20s.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Winnie Taylor and Marion Zickman, a brother, Ray Hunt, and a great-granddaughter, Shannon Thrams.
Memorials are suggested to Shriner's Children's Hospital, the Deaconess Children Home in Helena or the National Jewish Hospital in Denver.
Arrangements are by Rockman Funeral Chapel of Chester.
Survivors include daughters, Alma Seidel of Havre and Lela Didier of Chester; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
