KouGars, Thunderbirds, 4-0, in 9C basketball

By Tiffany L. Rehbein

Fifth-ranked KG is No. 1 in the District 9C with a perfect 4-0 conference record.

Unfortunately, the two-time defending State Class C champion KouGars are 5-1 overall, after being upset 68-37 by fourth-ranked Dutton in the opening-season game. Always tough competition, the KouGars edged the District 10C Chester Coyotes 46-45 last weekend. They also collected their biggest win of the season, an 83-8 rout of the Turner Tornadoes in conference play Saturday.

T.J. IronBear has been consistent offensively, averaging 13 points per game. Joey Stuart and Jared Miller have also put up big numbers offensively for KG.

The Hays/Lodgepole Thunderbirds (4-0, 5-2) are No. 2 in the district. Hays has put up some nice offensive numbers this season, scoring 105, 91, and 70 points, respectively, during the past three games.

Nine different players have posted double figures this winter, while the offensive mainstay has been Shawn Shambo.

In the 70-59 win over conference rival Big Sandy on Saturday, Shambo popped five 3-pointers in the game en route to his game-high 22 points.

The Blue Sky Eagles, who rely heavily upon the team concept, are third with a 2-1 conference record. They are 4-3 overall. The Eagles split during the past weekend, defeating Box Elder 75-61, and falling to non-conference Chester 73-58.

The Rocky Boy Stars (2-1, 3-3) are fourth in the district. Rocky Boy also spreads the offensive wealth, boasting nine different players with double figures throughout the season.

Josh Raining Bird and Mike Seaton can each nail the 3-pointer for the Stars.

Big Sandy and Turner are vying for the cellar -- neither team has a conference win, while Turner did defeat J-I's junior varsity team to open the season. Turner and Big Sandy are not scheduled to meet during the regular season.

Box Elder defeated the Havre junior varsity 74-56 Tuesday. They play two conference games, against Hays and Turner, this weekend.

Other conference games include: KG at Big Sandy, Blue Sky at Rocky Boy, Box Elder at Hays, Turner at Box Elder, and Rocky Boy at KG.
