BILLINGS Looking to repeat.
The Havre High school wrestlers are in Billings today for the All-Class state wrestling tournament. The Blue Ponies are the defending champions but come into the 1999-2000 tournament ranked No. 2 behind Columbia Falls.
Havre is coming off a huge divisional win and is taking 13 of their 14 wrestlers to state.
The Blue Ponies are taking, at 98 pounds, Ryan Chagnon and Nick Newell at 105 pounds. At 112 pounds will be Travis Velk.
Blue Pony Chad Hedges, at 119 pounds, is ranked sixth in the state.
At 125 pounds, Chad Maney is also currently ranked sixth in the state.
Havre's highest ranked wrestler is Nick Holt, who is ranked second at 130 pounds.
At 135 pounds, Jake Szudera is ranked No. 2.
Cody Hansen is wrestling at 140 pounds and is ranked No. 3.
Aaron Jenson will be going at 145 pounds, and Garrett Hanson will be going to fill the 152 pound spot.
At 160 pounds, the Blue Ponies will have K.P. Fisher.
Willie Hulett will wrestle at 171 pounds and at heavyweight will be Cliff Springer.
Blue Ponies head coach Scott Filius said his team has been wrestling very well the last couple of weeks. Filius said Columbia Falls has to be the favorite, but there will be great competition with Sidney and Corvallis.
"It will should be a dog fight, Columbia Falls has got the inside track but the battle for second place will be a scrap," Filius said.
Hulett had to withdraw from last weekend's divisional championship match due to an injury. Filius said it was just Hulett's shoulder which has been a nagging injury all season and instead of risking hurting it more he sat out.
Filius said they are all very excited to get back to state. There are six who were there last year and know what a state championship feels like and they want to keep the title of state champs.
Even though Columbia Falls is ranked No. 1, Filius said, he hopes they stay in the chase for the title. Most of all Filius wants to see his wrestlers perform well.
"I'd be happy to see them wrestle up to their ability and whatever happens, happens," Filius said.
The Blue Ponies have had a good week of practice and, Filius said, they are ready to wrestle.
