IONE B. JOHNSON: Obituary

PORTLAND Ione B. Johnson, 96, of Portland, Ore., died March 8, 2000 in Portland.

Private services for Johnson will be held and interment will be at the Libby City Cemetery in Libby.

Johnson was born Sept. 4, 1903 in Aneta, N.D. to Olaf and Elizabeth Johnson.

After high school in North Dakota, Johnson began a long career as a teacher. She later received her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Eastern Washington College of Education. Johnson subsequently moved to Harlem and then Havre, where she taught art and music. She retired from the Havre district in 1971 and remained in Havre until her move to Centralia, Wash. in the mid 1980s. She moved to Portland in 1998.

Johnson was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Royal Neighbors, the Eastern Star and the Presbyterian Church in Havre and Centralia. She worked as a volunteer for the hospital auxiliary in Centralia where she knitted more than 1,000 baby caps. She was a talented pianist, seamstress and art craftsman.

Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Joseph, and sister, Gertrude.

Survivors include brother Orlo B. Johnson; sister, Marian L. Johnson, both of Portland; four nieces, three grandnieces and one grandnephew.

Bateman Carroll Funeral Chapel and Crematory of Gresham, Ore. is in charge of arrangements.
