High school math students storm MSU-N

In the middle of spring break, close to 1,100 students were studying math at Montana State University-Northern Tuesday.

Students from schools in the region came to compete in the 2000 Math Contest, sponsored by the Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM). About 5,000 students compete in different regional competitions in the state.

The scoring for each test is compared to schools of the same class. The top 15 percent receive a superior rating in each test, and the next 20 percent receive an honorable mention. Multiple superiors and honorable mentions could be awarded to the same student for different tests.

The scores of students who receive superior ratings are forwarded to the state,and will be re-ranked with the superior ratings from around the state and state-level winners, superiors and honorable mentions will be awarded.

$200 scholarships from the MCTM and MSU-Northern fee waivers were offered to the winners at MSU-Northern, and $500 MCTM scholarships will be awarded to the state winners.

The winners of the regional $200 scholarships and MSU-Northern fee waivers were: male, Kirk A. Reichelt, Whitewater; female, Lisa Wagner, Havre High School.

In the grades 7-9 division, the top students for each class were: Class A: Tied, Philip C. Schatzka and Jeanna R. McPherson, Havre Middle School; Class B: Vance C. Kielb, Malta; Class C: Arden H. Mills, Turner.

The top teams for each class were: Class A: Havre Middle School, Tyler A. Schroeder, Mike Inabnit , Erika L. Johnson, Matthew T. Boucher, Ryan L. Hamilton and Jenna R. Baltrusch; Class B: Fort Benton, Tolan H. Allen, Anna L. Bronec, Amanda K. DeBruycker and Kiersten H. Ritland, Class C: Belt, Kelsey R. Bumgarner, Carly M. Raska, Wilson D. Raska, Nichole R. Widhalm, Dustin Fuller and Karlie R. Elam..

In the grades 10-12 division, top students for each class were: Class A: Charles D. Kolczak, Havre High School; Class B: Bradley L. Benjamin, Fort Benton; Class C: Kirk A. Reichelt, Whitewater.

In the grade 7-9 division, 46 Havre Middle School students received superiors and 57 received honorable mentions, 15 Chinook students received superiors and 15 received honorable mentions, 5 Havre Central students received superiors and 6 received honorable mentions, 19 KG School students received superiors and 22 received honorable mentions,

1 Rocky Boy School student received superiors and 5 received honorable mentions, 5 Harlem students received superiors and 11 received honorable mentions, 12 Chester students received superiors and received honorable mentions, 8 Big Sandy students received superiors and 10 received honorable mentions, 6 Blue Sky students received superiors and 14 received honorable mentions, 10 Turner students received superiors and 11 received honorable mention.

In the grade 10-12 division, 24 HHS students received superiors and 28 received honorable mentions, 3 Harlem students received honorable mentions, 20 Chester received superiors and 18 received honorable mentions, 5 Big Sandy students received superiors and 6 received honorable mentions, 5 Blue Sky students received superiors and 12 received honorable mentions, 10 KG Schools students received superiors and 21 received honorable mentions, 2 Rocky Boy High School students received superiors and 3 received honorable mentions, 5 Turner High School students received superiors and 12 received honorable mentions.
