Havre to celebrate national historic preservation week

By Michael Heins

The Havre Historic Preservation Committee will present historic preservation awards May 20 in honor of National Historic Preservation Week May 14-20.

The committee is currently in the process of developing a program scheduled for May 20 at the Heritage Center.

"There will be a slide show and a couple of other things for the event," said Emily Mayer-Lossing, historic preservation officer. "I plan to go to the museum to look for some old photos of Havre to put on display.

"We are currently working on the details."

The committee will also present historic preservation awards. There are three criteria for the awards:

Structures must be located in the designated historic district as outlined by the 1989 study. This was a study conducted by the Bear Paw Development Corporation and the Montana State Preservation Office. This district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Owners must show an ongoing interest in preserving the structure.

Additions or alterations must enhance the structure and not detract or damage the historical integrity of the structure.

The awards are being presented as a joint effort by the Clack Museum Foundation and the Havre Historic Preservation Commission.

"This year we would like to see other submissions from different homes; other than the homes that received awards last year," Mayer-Lossing said. "We know that there are other people deserving of an award and we are asking for nominations from the people of Havre.

"If the homes meet the criteria they will be eligible for the award.

"A lot of people have taken the time in working to preserve their homes and they should be recognized. They are preserving a piece of history."

Nominations must be in by May 15 to give time for the nominations to go through and notify recipients.
