Academic challenge set

By Tim Leeds

The Havre High School Academic Challenge 2000 begins tonight at the Havre High Auditorium.

Twenty-four teams with four members each will compete in the first round, held at 7 p.m.

The teams will compete in pairs, with the first team of the pair to correctly answer five questions advancing to tomorrow's second round, held at 1 p.m. in the auditorium.

The questions will cover every academic area, including mathematics, science, English, history and current events. They will be presented to the teams randomly.

The teams advancing to omorrow's competition will continue in the single elimination competition, with five correct answers needed to advance. Once the competition has been reduced to three teams, it will change to double elimination.

Plaques will be awarded to the members of the winning team.

Mary Wagner, who coordinates the event with Jane Hedstrom, said they begin the event in the evening to reduce the amount of school time needed for competition.

Wagner said the public is welcome to attend both tonight's and tomorrow's competitions.
