Shari Goodrich has a CD cover design to her credit a year before she receives her degree in that field.
Goodrich, who came to Montana State University-Northern from Hogeland, designed the cover for the last Timely Trio CD, "Livin' on the Western Edge." Goodrich is a junior majoring in graphic design at the university.
Mavis Filler, a member of Timely Trio, requested that members of an illustration class Goodrich was taking make a design for the cover of the CD. She described the concept of the album and requested some elements they wanted for the cover. She told them she wanted something to emphasize the "edge" part of the album title.
Goodrich's design used the left half of a color guitar with "edge" spelled down the right side of it in black and white. Filler chose that as the design for the cover from the thumbnails the class drew for her to look at.
After making a full-size creation of the design, it was sent to the album producers to be incorporated into the actual cover.
Goodrich said she plans to go into newspaper or magazine advertising after she graduates, and that this exercise gave her good experience in the work.
"I just brainstormed and came up with different ideas, made some thumbnails," she said. "Ultimately, she picked out the one she liked best and I executed that one."
The "Livin' on the Western Edge" album will be available at the Timely Trio concert this Sunday, where the group will also perform songs off of the album.
Timely Trio, with Marge Holt accompanying them on piano, will play at 5:30 p.m. at the Student Union Building Ballroom on the university campus. They follow an International Club Dinner at 4 p.m. Gene Allen will add lead guitar and play harmonica on some of the songs, and Holt will play the drums for one song.
Tickets for the show are $5, $2.50 for university students. They are available from Filler at the Student Services Office in Cowan Hall, from Denise Brewer at the Information Desk at the SUB, and at Cavaliers at 321 Third St. downtown.
