Things might look a little rough for Montana State University-Northern right now, but it has weathered many a tough time before.
The university is a solid institution, with extremely successful programs, and with some determination and support it can weather the current times as well.
While decreasing enrollment and reduced funding are causing difficulties, changes are in motion to enhance current successes, such as the new tech center planned for the technical programs and the search for NCATE accreditation and the preparing teachers for technology grant for the education programs. Other new programs are also proposed to improve the university, such as a degree in psychology.
Things may be difficult, with a new governor and many new legislators coming in by the next legislative session and the search for a new chancellor just beginning, but with support from the community, local legislators and the board of regents can help make sure things stay on track for the university.
This is a crucial time for the university, which is itself an integral part of Havre and the Hi-Line. The institution must be supported and advanced, not cut down. Everyone in the area benefits from the school, directly from its education and jobs or indirectly from its economic impact.
Now is the time for everyone to focus on what is good about the institution and what can be done to advance it, rather than its difficulties and problems.
Be sure the state government knows your support for the school. Be sure the local legislators have your support in fighting for the school. If we all come together and show we care, MSU-Northern can once again weather the tough times.
