McMaster, Poolaw, OConnell grab firsts at state Hershey meet

By Tiffany L. Rehbein

For the first time ever, Havre was the site of the state Hershey track and field meet. And things went so well at the Havre Middle School track that it could be considered again.

"This was a well-run meet," Ron Egeland, state Hershey program director from Billings said. "Participants and parents were pleased with the conduct of the meet and quality of the facility. We are considering Havre as the site for the 2001 state Hershey track and field meet."

Nearly 200 participants from 29 Montana communities converged on Havre on Saturday. Communities ranged in size from Ismay to Billings and across the state from Broadus to Frenchtown.

Participants could qualify for three events, however, no triple-event winners emerged from the meet.

A trio of local area participants gathered first-place ribbons at the meet.

Jacque McMaster of Chinook placed first in the 11-12-year-old girls' standing long jump. Last year, McMaster placed third in the event at the national meet held at Hershey, Penn.

Moses Poolaw of Box Elder placed first in the boys' 9-10 softball throw. Poolaw also placed third in the 100 meters.

Rylee O'Connell of Havre placed first in the girls' 13-14 200 meters and second in the 100 meters.

Hope Hedges of Havre placed second in the girls' 9-10 50 and 100 meters.

Relea McMaster of Chinook placed second in the girls' 13-14 standing long jump. Cody Donoven of Kremlin placed second in the boys' 11-12 softball throw.

Evan Hinebaugh of Chinook placed second in the boys' 11-12 400 meters and standing long jump.

Shane Kemmer of Havre placed third in the boys' 9-10 softball throw. Paige Salacinski of Havre placed third in the girls' 11-12 800 meters.

Kaila Warren of Hingham placed third in the girls' 13-14 standing long jump. Julie Owens of Havre placed third in the girls' 13-14 800 meters.

Rebekah Jarvey of Box Elder placed third in the girls' 13-14-year-old 1,600 meters.

Billings boasted three double winners Jessica Leslie, 9-10-year-old girls, 50 meters, standing long jump; Spencer Bellow, 9-10 boys, 50 meters, standing long jump; John Rhine, 13-14 boys, 100 meters, softball throw.

Bozeman, Joliet, and Livingston produced two double winners apiece Bozeman: Kristen Tilleman, 9-10 girls, 200 and 400 meters; Nathan Adams, 11-12 boys, 400 and 800 meters; Joliet: Ward Braten, 13-14 boys, 800 meters, 400-meter relay; Levi Muhs, 13-14 boys, standing long jump, 400-meter relay; Livingston: Jessica Payne, 11-12 girls, 100 and 200 meters; Tim Lee, 11-12 boys, 200 meters, 400-meter relay.

Other event winners were Kelly Olds of Great Falls who won the 9-10 boys' 200 and 400 meters, Christy Woodenthigh of Lame Deer who won 13-14 girls' 800 and 1,600 meters, and Ani Haas of Missoula who won the 13-14 girls' 100 meters and was a member of the 400-meter relay.

All participants received a T-shirt and the top eight places were awarded ribbons.

"The meet went smoothly and efficiently," Pam Smith, state meet director, said. "The volunteers running the meet were well organized and informed and moved the events along without a hitch."

Smith also thanked all the individuals and businesses that contributed to the success of the meet.

Event winners automatically qualify for the Region 3 team, which is comprised of a five-state area. Time/distance and population criteria will determine who is chosen for the regional team.

Traditionally, Montana sends five participants to the national meet, held in Hershey, Penn., August 9-12. The trip is all-expense-paid for the Region 3 members.
