The 2000 Red Ribbon Week begins Friday, Oct. 20, and large outdoor red ribbons are available today and tomorrow at the North Central Senior Citizen Center's front desk.
People in the community are asked to tie large red ribbons on trees or fixtures in their yards, or to display the Red Ribbon Week insert in the Oct. 20 edition of the Daily News, to show that their home is drug-free.
The Red Ribbon Campaign is designed to create awareness; build community coalitions; support healthy, drug-free lifestyles, and encourage prevention planning and activities.
Events begin Friday, taking advantage of the public schools being out for MEA conventions. Activities Friday include free Frisbee® Golf equipment use for youths at the Montana State University-Northern Student Union Building, free swimming at the Havre City Pool from 1 to 5 p.m., special matinees at the Havre Cinema 1 & 2 at 1 and 4 p.m., with prizes for anyone wearing red and special drawings, and $1 off the admittance price at Rock-n-Bowl at Hi-Line Lanes for anyone wearing red.
Other events include the walk/run at Deaconess Park on Sunday, where McGruff the Crime Dog, honorary chairperson of the week, will make an appearance. Radio contests will be held Monday through Wednesday on KOJM/KPQX, elementary students will enter a contest to decorate grocery bags for Albertson's, Gary & Leo's IGA and Mel's Food, and McGruff will hold an open house on Friday, Oct. 27 at the Havre-Hill County Library.
At the open house, Mcgruff will share Halloween safety tips and hand out trick-or-treat bags and "goodies."
