The VFW Ladies Auxiliary Outstanding Young Volunteer Awards entries are due by Dec. 31, said Auxiliary Publicist Mildred Schneider.
Winners will advance from the local level district, then state and then national competition.
Schneider said the young volunteer contest is open to local citizens between ages 12 and 15. Students should submit a typed original essay, maximum of 150 words, describing what their volunteer services are and why they are worthy of an award. Schneider said there will be two $1,000 awards on the national level for this contest.
Services could include volunteering at hospitals, nursing homes, senior citizen centers, helping with Red Ribbon week, providing services to veterans, and other charitable causes. The services could be part of activities for church, school or service groups, such as Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts.
Schneider said she knows there are many youths in the area that are involved in volunteer work. She said with the level of volunteerism in the area, she hopes that the Havre VFW Ladies Auxiliary will receive a large number of applications for the competition.
