Pets for presents?

Still looking for the perfect holiday gift for your family? How about a new dog or cat? On Dec. 16, you could find just what your looking for at the LUV Companion Adopt-A-Thon in Havre.

Renee Lanoue of Ren's Rescue animal shelter is putting together the Adopt-A-Thon, which will take place at the National Guard Armory, and will feature animals from several area animal shelters, including P.A.W.S., the Havre City Pound, Kitty Keepers, The Dedman Foundation, and private rescuer Christine Huston.

Lanoue said that the Adopt-A-Thon idea came from the number of animals currently being held at the shelters, and the increasing need to find homes for them. "Everybody is so maxed," Renee said, "they've been having to turn animals away, and that's very negative for the animals."

Lanoue expects 20-25 animals to be on site at the adoption, along with pictures and information on the numerous other animals available through the shelters. Anyone who has considered adding a canine or feline family member should make a point of showing up at the adoption, said Lanoue. Many lovable and adoptable varieties will be ready to view and take home to a new family.

Lanoue is hoping for a good turnout, but will be satisfied even if only a few animals are adopted. "Even if we get three adopted, it'll be three more than we had yesterday," she said.

The adoption will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Armory in Havre. Lanoue said that she is just delighted that the Armory allowed their space for the Adopt-A-Thon. Adoption fees will vary from personal donation to $15-$20, depending on the shelter.

Volunteers to help tend to the dogs througout the adoption would be greatly appreciated, said Lanoue. Anyone interested in helping with the adoption, or for more information on adopting a pet, contact Renee Lanoue at 265-7865 or 372-3197. If you are unable to make it to the adoption, and are still interested in adopting, contact your local animal shelter or rescue and give a home to a pet in need this holiday.
