With the confusion of the election finally over, and the selection of the the next president of the United States made by the Electoral College, the air in Washington, D.C., is starting to clear. We at The Havre Daily News commend our leaders for coming together to support the presidency of George W. Bush.
Vice President Al Gore has conceded the election and congratulated his victorious opponent, Congressional Democrats are saying that Bush has won and they will support his presidency, and, of course, Republican leaders have said Bush was the winner since the day after the election. Bush is meeting with leaders in Washington this week, including President William Clinton and Gore, to plan his transition into the presidency.
This is as it should be. With both the problems and the opportunities facing our country, the validity of our president should not be in question. Now is not the time to continue Congressional gridlock, which we have faced to some degree on and off for the last two decades or more.
Congress and the president should strive to work together, much in the fashion during Eisenhower's and Johnson's presidencies, when compromise and cooperativeness allowed action even with opposing parties in the branches of government.
Bush is also moving forward, presenting his selections for the cabinet, and his choices are well-thought out. He is presenting a selection of diverse, qualified people to advise him from the cabinet and help shape national policy.
We at The Havre Daily News also congratulate Bush for his victory, and commend and encourage our national leaders to work together to move our country forward.
