KG, Hays top District 9C in the early season

By Tiffany L. Rehbein

The KG KouGars, the back-to-back State Class C defending champions, lead the District 9C basketball standings.

The KouGars, 3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, will host Chester on Thursday, Jan. 6, and will travel to Turner Saturday for another conference game. The KouGars defeated the Coyotes in the title game last season.

The Hays/Lodgepole Thunderbirds are also 2-0 in the conference. The T'Birds swamped the Roy Pirates 105-46 before the Christmas break.

The offensive line of the Thunderbirds appears dangerous, with eight different players proving that they can score.

Hays will host the Turner Tornadoes on Friday, Jan. 7, to resume conference play. They will face Big Sandy on Saturday.

The Blue Sky Eagles are No. 3 in the district with a 2-1 conference record.

The Eagles have put together some strong offensive games, but did fall to the KouGars 52-49 on Dec. 17. Blue Sky will host Box Elder Friday in conference action, and will travel to Chester for a non-conference matchup on Saturday.

Rocky Boy, who has put seven different players in double figures this season, is even at 1-1 in the conference.

The Stars have alternated wins and losses this season, falling most recently to Hays 59-57 in conference action.

Box Elder, Turner, and Big Sandy are the only teams with losing records at this point.

The Pioneers have yet to tally a win, while the Bears and Tornadoes have notched one win apiece.
