RUDYARD Clarence Emil Wendland, 90, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at a Chester care center.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rudyard. Burial will follow at Inverness Cemetery.
Wendland was born Nov. 17, 1909 at Bergen, N.D. to Herman and Tracy (Wallner) Wendland. His parents homesteaded one mile west of Rudyard where he grew up and received his formal education. He graduated from Rudyard High School in 1927. After graduation he worked as a farmhand for Fred Elling Sr. and was employed at John Deere Implement Store in Rudyard.
On Sept. 18, 1933, he married Frances Marie Heck at Havre. The couple farmed the Wendland homestead until their retirement in 1979 when they moved to Rudyard. In addition to farming he worked as a private painter for 40 years throughout the Hi-Line area.
He was baptized and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran. He was a lifelong member of the old St. John's Lutheran Church in Rudyard. He was an active member serving on the council and held many offices in the church. He was one of the last living members of St. John's congregation.
He was also a member of the Rudyard Gun Club and the Farmer's Union.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, trap-shooting, bowling and square dancing. He enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle and whist, reading westerns, family picnics and camping.
Wendland was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Teresa, a daughter-in-law, Kathy, a brother, Leonard and a sister, Estelle Elling.
Survivors include his wife, Frances of Chester; sons, C. Dale Wendland of Rudyard, Bill Wendland of Dickinson, N.D., and Rex Wendland of Mission Viejo, Calif.; a daughter, Sue Moss of Conrad; eight grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Arrangements are by Rockman Funeral Chapel of Chester.
