SHELBY Both the KG KouGars and Rocky Boy Stars were in Shelby yesterday for the Northern C Divisional tournament.
The KouGars fell to Winnett 56-39 and Rocky Boy was downed by Heart Butte 90-61.
KG and Winnett played a great first quarter with the Rams leading 14-13 at the end of one.
In the second quarter the KouGars stepped up and outscored Winnett 14-7 to capture a 27-21 halftime lead.
The second half though would not be as kind to the KouGars.
In the third Winnett cut in to the KG lead and trailed 34-33.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Rams as they outscored KG 23-5 to move in the semi-finals.
Winnett was led in scoring by Davey Iverson who finished with 22 points.
The only KG scorer in double figures was Aaron Smith, who finished with 10. Smith hit three 3-pointers and one free throw.
KG now moves into a loser out contest against Highwood today.
This is the first tournament game the KouGars have lost in the last two years. The two-time defending state champions now will need a challenge game win to move onto state.
Heart Butte came in one of the favorites and jumped out on the Star early.
The Warriors led after on quarter of play 21-10.
Rocky Boy had their best play in the second quarter as they outscored Heart Butte 16-14 to cut into the Warriors lead.
Heart Butte still led at the half 35-26.
The Stars tried to stay with the 10C champions in the second half but came up short. Heart Butte outscored Rocky Boy 26-17 in the third quarter and 29-18 in the fourth to pick up the win.
Heart Butte was led by Jess Racine and C.J. Aims Back, who each had 16 points. Wayne Racine finished with 12.
Mike Morsette led the way for the Stars with 16 points. Kyle MacDonald was the only other Rocky Boy player in double figures.
The Stars move into a loser out game today against Winifred.
