The news of Jacob Gary Spang's possible release from the Hill County Justice Center is shocking.
Spang, 18, his 16-year-old sister Francine, and Reid Danell, 18, are charged with two counts of deliberate homicide by application of the felony murder rule, two counts of intimidation by accountability, one count of tampering with evidence, and car theft.
Kristi Walker, 30, and Kevin Caplette, 35, were found shot to death at a home in the 1200 block of Sixth Street shortly before 1 p.m. on Sept. 16, 1999. Danell is accused of pulling the trigger on both victims.
After a 3 hour hearing in which a handful of people testified, 12th Judicial District Court Judge John Warner reportedly set Spang's bail at $25,000.
The three accused are innocent until proven guilty, but we feel, for safety reason, all three should remain incarcerated until taken to trial. The trio should remained jail not only for the public's safety, but for their safety.
Granted, Warner ruled that Spang must remain law-abiding, refrain of the use of alcohol and drugs and maintain contact with his attorney by telephone. But he also ruled that Spang would be forbidden from returning to Hill County except for court proceedings.
Have we already forgotten six months after the execution style homicides that two victims were gunned down and repeatedly shot until dead?
Two people are dead and one of the suspect's can get out of jail for $2,500. A place to stay and 10 percent of the ordered $25,000 is all Spang needs to get out of jail.
Laws are laws, but real life shouldn't be like a game of Monopoly there should be no get-out-of-jail-for-free cards.
