The fires of a rivalry are being fanned.
The Chester Coyote girls' track team placed first at the Rocky Boy Invitational, knocking off powerhouse Big Sandy, who finished second at the meet.
Chester finished with 121 points, while Big Sandy had 96 points. The meet was held at the Havre Middle School on Wednesday.
The Coyotes captured big points in the high jump, with sophomore Michele Van Dyke claiming the individual trophy with a season-high jump of 5-5. Teammate Carlane Jensen placed second with a personal-best jump of 5-0.
Chester's Maci Tempel placed first in the 300-meter hurdles, clocking in at 49.92. Emily Tranberg grabbed a fifth-place finish with a time of 51.15. Tempel also placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 60.03.
However, Big Sandy scored well in the event, with Amy Silvan hot on the heels of Tempel. Silvan placed second with a time of 60.04. And teammate Eryn Darlington was nearby, placing third with a time of 60.04.
The Pioneers fared well in the 800, with Kate Bitz winning with a time of 2:28.2. She also won the 1,600 with a time of 5:49.8.
Eryn Darlington placed second in the 800 (2:30.9), while Sheena Darlington placed fifth in the 1,600 (6:04). Big Sandy's distance runner Sasha Ritter is out with an injury for the remainder of the season.
The Pioneers' Kristi Upham placed first in the 200 with a time of 27.8.
Blue Sky finished seventh with 35 points and KG was ninth with 23 points.
KG freshman standout Kim Berg set a season-best mark in the javelin with a toss of 127-8. She also placed fourth in the high jump, clearing 4-10.
Blue Sky's Carlye Reddig placed first in the long jump, leaping 15-9. Tami Infante of Box Elder was second with a jump of 15-7 1/2.
On the boys' side, the KG KouGars continued their dominance, winning with 147.5 points.
Chester placed fourth (53.5), Big Sandy was seventh (27), and J-I 10th (10).
The KouGar relays placed first (400-meter), second (1,600) at the meet with individual titles coming in the 800 (Eric Hanson), discus (Tel Sterner), and triple jump (Joey Stuart).
Jared Miller of KG placed second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.67 and fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.07. Chester placed two in the event, while J-I's Curtis May placed fourth.
Aaron Smith placed second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:44.3, while Hanson placed third (4:50.9). Speedy Craig Widhalm of Belt won the event (4:42.4).
Sterner threw the discus 124-10 for a first-place finish for KG, while teammate Robbie Gomke placed second with a toss of 116-3 1/4.
Big Sandy's Mace Mangold continued his dominance of the pole vault, with a first-place season-high jump of 13-3.
