Jay Springer, owner/president of Milk River Engineering, Inc. in Havre, has been nominated by Darla Berg of the Havre chapter of the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) as the state's Outstanding Young American.
Springer will attend the state Jaycees' convention May 19-21, where the state nominee will be chosen.
The nomination form of the state honoree will be forwarded to the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce to be considered for one of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans (TOYA). The 10 honorees will be notified of their selection no later than mid-November.
If he is selected as one of the 10, Springer will be required, barring extreme circumstances, to attend the TOYA Congress in January, with trip expenses paid in full.
Each honoree is awarded a silver medallion and the silver TOYA "Touching Hands" trophy. The awards ceremony dramatizes each winner's career in narrative form.
Springer, who graduated from Havre High School in 1982, received his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Montana State University in 1989.
He worked at Delta Engineering in Great Falls in 1989, then was project manager at the Montana Department of Transportation from 1989-1994. In October of 1993 Springer started Milk River Engineering as sole proprietor, part time. The company was incorporated with four full time partners in 1994.
Springer and Jeremy Siemens are the current proprietors of Milk River Engineering, Inc. The company employs 3 full time employees and 12 to 14 seasonal employees.
Springer is a member of the Montana Association of Registered Land Surveyors, the National Association of Professional Engineers, the Montana State University-Northern Booster Club, the Montana State University-Bozeman Alumni Association and the Montana Dart Players Association.
He was a board member of the Great Falls Transit District from 1989-1991, a member of the Havre Public Schools Board of Trustees from 1997-2000, a member of the Havre Long Range Plan Committee in 1999, and is currently a member of the Blue Pony Stadium Committee, the City of Havre Zoning Board, the Montana State University-Northern Engineering Curriculum Advisory Board and of the First Lutheran Church Stewardship Board.
