ROCKY BOY Longtime tribal council member Alvin John Windy Boy, Sr. and Daryl "Buck" Wright will square off for the Chippewa Cree Tribal Chairmanship in November. The winner in the general election will replace Chairman Bert Corcoran who decided to retire rather than seek re-election.
Windy Boy, with 522 votes, and Wright, with 206, were the two top voter getters among the four candidates in Tuesday's primary tribal election. The other two candidates and their tallies were Peter Demontiney with 197 and Russell Houle, Sr. with 139.
The chance to run for several other elected positions with the Chippewa Cree Tribe of Rocky Boy's Reservation were up for grabs during Tuesday's primary.
The top eight vote getters among the 40 candidates vying for four seats on the Business Committee Tuesday advance to the November ballot. The top eight and their votes were: Charles Gopher, 226; Harvey B. Friede, Sr., 198; Russell Standing Rock, 191; Tony Belcourt, 186; Tim Rosette, Sr., 177; Raymond "Jake" Parker, 169; Joe Big Knife, 165; Pete T. LaMere, 160.
The other 32 vote getters for tribal council seats and their tallies were: Roger St. Pierre, 118; Enos R. Johnson, Sr., 115; Earl Archie Arkinson, 73; Lydia M. Sutherland, 71; Suzanne "Billy" Stump, 92; Mario Patacsil, Sr., 107; Louis Luke Parisian, 104; Teddy Russette III, 121; Melvin Morsette, Jr., 84; Joe Demontiney, Jr., 97; Kenneth C. Writing Bird, 114; John (Sonny) Roasting Stick, Jr., 54; Rosemary (Bunty) Lafromboise, 81; Steve Morsette, Sr., 29; Leon (Blackie) Sutherland, 119; James Pechum Wells, 44; James "Jimmy" LaMere, 40; George Henderson, 130; Gordon J. Whitford, 153; Tina Chief Stick, 32; Michael E. LaMere, Junior, 44; Warren Paul Small, Sr., 75; Pete "Babz" Demontiney, Jr., 49; Jonathan J. Four candidates threw their hats into the ring for the chief tribal judge position, but only two advance to November. They are Gilbert Belgarde with 517 votes and Jody LaMere with 240. The other two candidates and their votes were Arthur "Ozzie" Windy Boy with 231 and Harriet Standing Rock with 82.
Two of the seven candidates for associate judge positions advance to the general election. The top two and their votes are Ken Gardipee with 535 votes and Mike Parker, Sr., with 336. The other candidates and their votes were Selina K. Johnson, 151; Lily Corcoran, 236; Jeanne Big Knife Hobbs, 198; Robert Robbie Alexander, 182; Crystal L. Denny, 290.
