Northstars go 3-0 at host tournament

By Damion Martindale

The Havre Northstars faced three tough teams over the weekend as they hosted the Havre baseball jamboree.

Friday's game saw the Northstars (6-1 conference, 21-7 overall) take on the Williston (N.D.) T-Birds. In the bottom of the first inning, Jared Boyce sacrificed in Nate Baltrusch for the Northstars' first run of the game.

In the top of the fourth inning, the T-Birds got on the board as Brent Spowe and Tyler Mann crossed the plate to give Williston a 2-1 lead.

The Northstars regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when David Heberly scored on a T-Bird error and David Knight drove in Kyle Sheppard for the 3-2 lead.

Ricky Brown pitched for the Northstars, shutting down the T-Birds for most of the game, giving up two runs on two hits and striking out five for the complete game win.

Glendive showed up to face the Northstars in Saturday's game. Northstars' pitcher Boyce looked to improve on his 1-3 record. Boyce gave up three hits, no runs, and struck out nine Glendive batters on his way to a complete game shutout.

On the offensive side of the field, the Northstars were able to score one run in the first inning when Brown sacrificed in Baltrusch who reached base on a lead-off single.

The Northstars scored two more runs in the second inning when Glendive pitcher B. Sukut balked in Jay Rucinsky, and, after a Heberly double, Kyle Sheppard hit an RBI single to give the Northstars a 3-0 lead.

Havre added one more run in the fourth inning and finished off Glendive in the sixth with Knight driving in Heberly for a 5-0 victory.

On Sunday afternoon, the Northstars took on the Glasgow Reds. The Northstars looked to get on the board in the first inning when Baltrusch reached base on a Reds error.

Brown slapped a single into right field, which allowed Baltrusch to come around to score. A couple of Reds' fielding errors produced two more Northstar runs to give them a 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning.

Baltrusch would touch home plate again in the bottom of the second inning. With the bases loaded, Boyce was hit in the back by Glasgow pitcher Grimes to give the Northstars a 4-0 lead.

The Reds would rally, scoring one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to cut the Northstars' lead in half at, 4-2. The Reds then had runners on first and second when S. Falcon hit into a game ending 6-4-3 double play.
