CHINOOK Elizabeth Sanford Benuska, 94, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at a Havre hospital due to natural causes.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2000 in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Alice Nash Memorial Cemetery on the Lone Tree Bench.
Benuska was born in New York City, NY to John and Elizabeth (Wiesanthaner) Ferko on Dec. 11, 1905. She, at age 10, a sister age 8, a brother age 5, and her mother moved to Big Sandy as homesteaders on April 26, 1916. They were taken 65 miles southeast from Big Sandy to their new home. Her father joined them in August of the same year.
Benuska married Albert Erwin (Hon) Sanford on Oct. 25, 1922 in Havre. They farmed and ranched on the Ragland Bench until 1960.
Sanford died Dec. 28, 1968 and in Oct. of 1972 she married childhood friend George Benuska. He died in May of 1978.
She is best known for her sourdough pancakes and beautiful flowers.
She is survived by her son, Albert of Casper, Wyo. and daughter, Leona Gilmore of Chinook, six grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
