The Timely Trio, a Havre female singing group, will be a featured performer at the Whoop It Up 2000 summer celebration in Fort Benton Saturday, June 17, with Marge Holt accompanying them on piano.
The trio, consisting of Kim Callahan of Dickinson, N.D., formerly of Havre, and Mavis Filler and Dena Tippets, both of Havre, and Holt will perform at the Old Fort Park Stage from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The group will also be singing gospel music Sunday as part of the Fourth Annual Gospel Jubilee, also at the Old Fort Park Stage, beginning at 2 p.m.
The Timely Trio, most known for 1986's "The Havre Song," has recently released their first CD, "Livin' on the Western Edge." It is the group's third album.
"Livin' on the Western Edge" consists of original songs written by Callahan and Filler. One of Callahan's songs on the album is "The River Song," which incorporates percussion sounds of a rain stick and drum to create the river movements portrayed by the haunting melody.
Other songs include "The Eye of the Needle," which is located on the upper Missouri River, and "Fort Assinniboine," a fictional ballad of a young boy who lived and died at the fort.
Callahan, Filler and Tippets have been performing together as Timely Trio since 1983. Holt has been playing piano for the group for about four years. Callahan moved to Dickinson, N.D., shortly after writing "The Havre Song", but the group still gets together to perform.
Filler said Callahan is often writing a song on the way to a performance. She said they have to learn it rather quickly once they get there.
Holt, an accomplished pianist and graduate of the Royal College of Music in England, has taught piano, guitar and violin in Havre for more than 20 years.
Filler said the group likes to sing at conventions and conferences. Other upcoming performances include the Old Forts Trail Celebration at Fort Assinniboine on June 24, the Arts on the Prairie open air concert at Dickinson, N.D., on July 18, Havre Festival Days on Sept. 17, and the MACO Convention in Havre on September 24.
