Legion alumni show old tricks in classic matchup

By Damion Martindale

The Havre Comet, and Northstar alumni showed they still had some play left in them by showing the youngsters a trick or two in two one-run victorys.

In the first game the Comets faced off against the older alumni. Both teams' pitchers dominated the game, Dave Fanning for the alumni, and Eric Lipp for the Comets. Fanning went four complete innings, shuting out the Comets. Berry Kato came in relief for the alumni, and picked up where Fanning left off, also holding the Comets scoreless.

Lipp, the Comet starting pitcher, pitched two shutout innings. Doug Ireland and Ben Mader also kept the alumni off the score board. In the bottom of the seventh inning the alumni got the game's only run on Danny Wertzberger's wild pitch to give the alumni a 1-0 victory.

In the second game of the evening the Northstars took on the younger alumni.

The alumni took an early one nothing lead into the bottom of the third inning. C J Reichelt changed all of that with one swing, a two run home-run to deep center field. The Northstars would add one more run in the third for the 3-1 lead. The alumni would regain the lead in the top of the fifth inning scoring three runs on two hits for the 4-3 lead. The alumni would add four runs in the sixth to seemingly wrap the game up.

The Northstars would respond scoring three runs in the sixth to get with-in two, and in the bottom of the seventh Kyle Sheppard scores Ricky Brown to get with in one. With one on and two outs, Jay Rusinsky grounds out to end the game giving the alumni a 8-7 win.
