Dr. James Elliott, who practiced medicine in Havre from 1960 until 1998, died Saturday, Sept. 9 at a Missoula Hospital.
Elliott, who was 70, was born in North Dakota, moving to Havre with his family shortly thereafter.
A graduate of Havre High School, he received his premed degree from Northern Montana College.
He married Katherine "Kay" Kotan in 1952, and they moved to Oregon, where he received his doctor of medicine degree and did his residency in pediatrics at the University of Oregon.
Dr. Robert Henderson of Northern Montana Hospital said Elliott was originally going to become a faculty member at the university, but "he came back between graduation and teaching and never left."
Elliott was well-known in the Havre area with his 38-year award-winning practice. Some families have three generations which were delivered by him, Henderson said.
The couple moved to Whitefish after he retired in June of 1998.
Elliott and his wife, who died Aug. 16, 1999, raised six children in Havre: Ron, who currently lives in Saline, Mich.; James Jr. of Billings, Mark of Missoula; Scott of Burlington, Wash, and Nancy and Janice of Seattle.
A prayer vigil will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Havre. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15 in the Montana State University-Northern gymnasium. A reception will follow the service in the Student Union Building. Graveside service will be private, for family members only.
