Police arrest drug suspect after extensive search

Havre police apprehended a Box Elder man shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 10th Street Thursday after a long search.

Ruben N. McDowell, 24, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of more than 60 grams of marijuana. He was taken to jail.

Havre police had sought McDowell since Sept. 13 when officers initiated a traffic stop on west First Street. The suspect vehicle was pulled over after officers noticed an expired temporary sticker on the car.

McDowell, alleged driver of the vehicle, escaped by entering the the convenience store and bolting out the back door as officers spoke with his 16-year-old companion.

Officer obtained permission to search the vehicle the night of the incident and discovered what Assistant Chief of Police Mark Stolen said was a laundry list of items including: marijuana, a scale, a .40 caliber handgun with fully loaded clip, a police scanner, wine coolers, a knife and phone cards.

Officers cited the boy the night of the incident with possession of dangerous drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, under age tobacco possession, and purchase or possession of intoxicants by a minor.
