Keenan, Rehberg coming to Havre to debate issues

By Ron VandenBoom

The Havre Daily News and Yellowstone Public Broadcasting of Billings announced today that they will sponsor a live debate between Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Keenan and Republican candidate Dennis Rehberg.

The debate is scheduled to take place from 5-6:30 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 28, in the MSU-Northern SUB Ballroom.

The local chapter of the Business and Professional Women Club will assist in the debate.

The debate will be broadcast live over KEMC Public Radio in Billings and KBMC in Bozeman as well as its affiliates around the state. In Havre listeners can tune in the broadcast at 80.1 on their dial and in Chester to 100.1 the night of the debate.

The public is also welcome and encouraged to attend the debate in person.

According to the rules negotiated by the Daily News and Jackie Yamanaka, news director for Yellowstone Public Broadcasting and agreed to by the candidates, a coin toss will determine which candidate is to be the first to give a three minute opening statement. Questions will then alternate between the two candidates.

The first candidate to receive a question will have two minutes to answer before his, or her, opponent is allowed a two minute response. Each candidate will then have one minute for a rebuttal statement.

The candidates will be questioned by a panel of journalists and also respond to questions selected in advance from the public.

Anyone wanting to ask a question of the candidates should submit their question for consideration in advance to the Havre Daily News, C/O Harvey Brock, 119 Second Street, Havre Mt. 59501.

Questions can also be submitted through the weekly poll on the Havre Daily New website at www.havredailynews.com.
