ROOSEVELT GRAY
FORT BELKNAP Roosevelt W. Gray, 76, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000 at a Fort Belknap hospital of natural causes.
Wake service will be 7 p.m. today at the Red Whip Community Center at Fort Belknap. Wake/rosary will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Chief Nosey Center in Lodgepole. Mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday
at the Chief Nosey Center, with burial in the Big Warm Cemetery with military honors.
Gray was born Aug. 19, 1924 at Lodgepole to Oscar and Esther (Boy Chief) Gray. His Indian name, Wamnee Sha ah dah zeebe atune, means "Eagle born with red arrow."
He was raised and educated in Lodgepole and enlisted in the Army in 1943. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes and the Rhineland and was discharged on Dec. 30, 1945.
Gray returned to Fort Belknap and married Myrtle Horse Capture in 1947 in Chinook. Roosevelt worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs Roads Department for more than 30 years. He retired in the 1980.
Gray served on tribal council after retiring. He enjoyed farming and ranching after his retirement.
Gray was a traditional dancer and enjoyed going to powwows.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife in 1991.
Survivors include his sons, Wilbur O. Gray, Sr. of Fort Belknap, Don L. Gray of Wolf Point, adopted son Emery Gray of Fort Belknap; daughter, Hallie Gray of Fort Belknap, adopted daughters, Shelly M. Gray, Jara L. Gray of Arizona; sisters, Sarah Doney of Beaver Creek, Nellie Clark of Frazer; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
