CUT BANK -- The Havre Blue Ponies did what they could in Cut Bank during the weekend to raise their spot in the Class A standings, as they finished second behind Columbia Falls with a score of 206.
The Blue Ponies had the lead after day one, but it was a very slim two-point lead over Columbia Falls.
Havre advanced one wrestler into a championship in Chad Hedges at 119 pounds. Hedges was pinned by Glasgow's Josh Thompson to finish second.
The Blue Ponies had five wrestlers who competed in matches for third place.
At 105 pounds, Nick Newell won by technical fall over Ben Hileman of Columbia Falls.
Travis Velk lost by pin at 112 pounds to Wayne French of Malta. Chad Maney was also pinned in the 125-pound weight class by Conrad's Zach Lockyer.
At 130 pounds, Blue Pony Nick Holt won by technical fall over Choteau's Austin Sessions.
Willie Hulett fell in a 6-4 decision to Chinook's Michael Maddox at 171 pounds.
Finally, it was Jason Davis of Corvallis getting by Jacob Szudera of Havre in a 3-0 decision.
Ryan Chagnon wrapped up fifth place at 98 pounds with a pin of Adam Anderson from Lewistown at the 1:36 mark.
Cody Hanson also finished fifth at 140 pounds by virtue of a pin, as he won over Scott Owens of Shelby at the 3:56 mark.
At 145 pounds, Aaron Jensen won in a 2-1 decision over Trampas Herseim of Columbia Falls for fifth place.
vK.P. Fisher pinned Anthony Ayers of Cut Bank at the 2:20 mark at 160 pounds.
At 189 pounds, it was C.J. Reichelt who pinned Matt Roberts of Choteau in :34.
Havre head coach Scott Filius said his athletes wrestled well.
Filius said he did not place as many wrestlers in the finals as they had wanted to.
"You just can't stay with Columbia Falls when you place just one in the finals," Filius said.
It was also a real break-through weekend for some of the wrestlers. Filius said he was pleased to see those athletes who had not placed in other tournaments, finally place.
Friday to start the tournament, Filius said, they wrestled as well as they could. He was a little disappointed in the fact that they only won one of nine semi-final matches.
The Blue Ponies now get set to head to the other side of the state and the Cowboy Invitational in Miles City.
"This weekend we saw everybody from the west, next weekend we see everybody from the east," Filius said.
These two weekends give the Havre team a good look at just where they are in the state and where they need to be by February.
This week in practice, Filius said, they need to look at getting sharper. "We were not as sharp when it came to crunch time," Filius said.
