JOPLIN AND BIGFORK -- Jennie Leora Hodges, 91, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at a Bigfork care center.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Joplin Cemetery with the Rev. David Aaseng officiating.
Hodges was born July 25, 1908, to O.D. Hill and Mary Phelps Hill. At the age of 3, she moved with her family to the Goldstone community north of Joplin. She attended Goldstone Country School, then helped raise her younger siblings due to her mother's poor health. She also babysat for neighbors and helped with the farm chores. She worked in the laundry business in Bremerton, Wash.
On March 20, 1924, she married Frank Hodges in Seattle, Wash. After their marriage the couple moved to Joplin to farm. She raised chickens and a garden and was involved in the farming operations. The couple retired in 1975, and moved to Bigfork.
After the death of her husband in 1993, she remained in Bigfork until October of 1999, when her health failed and she transferred to the Lakeview Care Center.
She enjoyed writing and receiving letters and visiting with old friends. Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting, and making quilts for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed baking bread and cooking.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Wesley, a sister, Verda, and five brothers, Wesley, Arthur, Ray, Lloyd and Bobbie.
Survivors include a son, Leland of Bigfork; a sister, Anne Ward of Mesa, Ariz.; a brother, Walter Hill of Fortuna, Calif.; two sister-in-laws, Mildred Hill of Pulman, Wash., and Genevieve Hill of Centralia, Wash.; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Undesignated memorials will be given to the Q.R.U. in Bigfork.
Rockman Funeral Chapel of Chester is in charge of arrangements.
