The MSU-Northern Skylights will serve their way into the community.
The Skylights will host a serve-a-thon on Saturday, Jan. 22, from 9 a.m.-noon.
"This is a great way to give back to the community," head Skylights' coach Lisa Handley said. "Since this is a female sport, it is a good way to give back to the woman."
The Skylight spikers have been in their hometowns and throughout Havre during the past month, collecting donations to raise money for a scholarship fund.
Half of the money raised is being donated to Haven House in Havre, a program that works with victims and children of domestic abuse and sexual violence.
Each Skylight spiker will serve 250 balls on Saturday. The spikers set of goal of $3,000, with half going to the program.
"I think it's incredible that they think of our program," Program Director Roxanne Ross said. "I think it's incredible that the college students want to give to the community in that way."
The Haven House sports a shelter, crisis line, and victim/witness advocacy. It also runs men's and women's intervention groups.
From July 1998-June 1999, the Haven House sheltered 85 women, 103 children, and accepted 466 calls on the crisis line, Ross said.
It also assisted 186 victims of crime through its advocacy program and assisted in 65 orders of protection.
"I think it's (domestic abuse) a problem in our community, and the fact that they are helping is wonderful," Ross said.
