Shandi Freier has sold a lot of Girl Scout cookies over the years, but this year she has a new goal: to sell 1,000 boxes.
Freier, a 17-year-old junior at Havre High School, said she has been a Scout since she was 5. She said she wasn't eligible to sell the cookies that year, but has every year since.
She said yesterday she's sold about 350 boxes so far.
The sale began on Jan. 14, and she will be taking orders to the end of the month, Freier said. She said if she hasn't reached her goal she will have booth sales in March when the cookies are delivered to make up the difference.
Freier said she expects to earn the Gold Award, Girl Scouts' highest award, this fall, and probably won't participate as a Scout after that. There has never been 1,000 boxes of cookies sold in Havre before, she said, and wants to end her time with the scouts by being the first.
"I want to go out with a bang," she said.
Freier said Girl Scouts is a tradition in her family. Her older sister, now 24, began when she was 5, Freier said, and she expects her 1-year-old sister to do the same.
Freier said while she probably won't be in the program as a participant, she plans on being involved for the rest of her life. She said she plans on spending a month at a Girl Scout resident camp this summer as a counselor-in-training, which is part of the reason she wants to sell 1,000 boxes of cookies. One of the prizes for this is a free week at camp, which she said will help with the cost.
