The task force committee compiled a list of alternatives to be presented to the Havre Public School Board of Trustees concerning the possible addition and/or deletion of athletics at Havre High School at a meeting Monday.

Boys' and girls' soccer, girls' fastpitch softball, and boys' cross country are the sports that interested parties wish to see added as Montana High School Association sanctioned activities at Havre High.

The committee, which has been holding meetings since October, prepared written alternatives to present to the school board in March.

Public input was received at a public meeting in December, and that information will also be presented to the school board.

Some of the alternatives included a brief summary of why to add the sport and options for funding the sport.

The task force will not be making a recommendation to the school board, rather their purpose had been to review the possibility of adding and/or deleting activities at Havre.

"This committee is not a broad-based group of our constituents in the community," said Ric Floren, task force facilitator. "This is not a good cross section of our community to make a recommendation to the school board."

The committee unanimously voted to not delete any activities currently offered to high school students.

"No one will advocate the deleting of a sport," Floren said.

In reviewing the possibility of adding sports, the soccer, softball, and cross country group had each provided the committee with cost issues, projected number of participants, facility use, and general expense of having and maintaining the program.

Funding and Title IX and the Ridgeway Agreement, a law that states the number of girls' activities offered must be equal to or more than the number of activities offered to boys, are two problems that currently exist.

For example, boys' cross country could not be added unless a girls' sport was added, or a boys sport that currently exists would need to be eliminated.

The final findings of the committee will be presented to the school board in March.
