Robert D. Nelson, 73, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000 at a Great Falls hospital of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Holland & Bonine Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Walt Kirkegaard officiating. Burial with Veteran Honors will follow at Highland Cemetery.
Nelson was born Feb. 23, 1926 north of Havre to Victor and Hazel (Hunter) Nelson. He grew up on the farm and attended country school at Lohman's school until the fourth grade. He then attended school in Havre.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After his discharge, he returned to Havre and began working for various farmers north of Havre and hauling grain.
He was later employed by Great Northern Railroad in the diesel shop, and then worked at Tiber Dam.
On July 29, 1950, he married Delores Elaine Frey in Chinook. The couple later divorced.
Nelson moved to California and then Denver while working as a mechanics assistant.
He later returned to Havre and was employed by his sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and Pete Woronik on their farm north of Havre. He worked there for 17 years.
He enjoyed repairing small machinery and collecting various things.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Frank and Roy Nelson, a daughter, Evelyn Templeton and a grandson, Jeremy Templeton.
Survivors include a son, Ed Nelson of Lewistown; daughters, Ruby Caton of Whitefish, Leona Nelson of Phoenix, and Maxine Munson of Havre; sisters, Dorothy Woronik and Minnie Simko of Havre; brothers, John Nelson of Hungry Horse and Melvin Nelson of Georgia; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
