Havre Soroptimists give awards

By Tim Leeds

Soroptimists International of Havre presented Viola Grant and Lisa Wagner with the year 2000 awards by the organization's award committee.

Lisa Wagner, a senior at Havre High School, received the Youth Citizenship Award from the Soroptimists. Fran Lohse, the chairman of the awards committee, said the winner of the award is mainly chosen by need and by citizenship and involvement in the community. Wagner received a certificate and a $200 check for the award.

Viola Grant, a student at Montana State University-Northern majoring in communication, received the Women's Opportunity Award. Lohse said the winner for this award is chosen by need and how the applicant is doing to further their education and better themselves. Grant received a certificate and a $500 check for the award.

Lohse said both Grant and Wagner are eligible to compete in the Soroptomists' multi-state regional competition. She said she has already been notified that Wagner has been selected for the regional competition.

Lohse said the judges for the awards are not part of Soroptomists International. She said they are selected as judges by the awards committee, and review the applications and make the final selection. The selection between the different finalists can be a difficult choice, Lohse said.

Lohse said this year's judges were Vicki Larson, Terry Schend and Daryl Schultz.

Lohse said there are no stipulations on the use of the money awarded by the Soroptimists.
