County detention center staff to meet with commissioners

Under staffing at the Hill County Justice Center is causing some safety concerns, according to detention personnel.

The detention union for the sheriff's department will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday to discuss personnel issues with the Hill County commissioners at the courthouse.

Commissioner Pat Conway said the meeting is concerning personnel issues.

Union representative Dick Letang, scheduled to represent the Hill County Sheriff and dispatch personnel, may attend the meeting.

Letang said he was not sure who will represent the Union members at the Thursday meeting.

"The detention staff feels that the facility is understaffed and that the under staffing is a safety issue," Letang said.

The union and detention staff want to discuss the problem and possible solutions with the commissioners.

"The staff just wants the county commissioners to hear their side of the story," Letang said. "They feel its a legitimate safety issue."

One solution could be more staffing.

"We need more staffing to help eliminate the problem," Letang said.

The new, larger detention center has almost the same number of staff employed as the old facility had, he said.
