School District Planning for 2000-01

Havre Public Schools' planning for the 2000-01 school year is underway. The school district calendar for next year has been approved by the Trustees and events and activities are being scheduled. The budget request process is being put together by the school district team with the goal of presenting the information to the trustees for their review during the week of May 15-19. In putting the budget together, a great deal of planning for our student needs in the coming year is required. The planning involves all district personnel in reviewing current

programs to determine what is in the best interest of our kids in promoting sound decisions for their future.

School Election

The Board of Trustees will meet on March 14 to consider budget needs and possible mill levy requests for the May 2, 2000 school election. The last legislative session significantly changed the school election process by moving the election from April to May, requiring that requests for increased funds be spelled out on the ballot (rather than the old request for budget authority - which was very confusing), and that a mill levy election can only occur once. The Trustees will be considering placing an Elementary Building Reserve issue and a High School mill levy issue on the May 2 ballot during their meeting on March 14. A future superintendent's corner will outline the decisions of the trustees and explain information to the public in preparation for the ballot.

This year's school election ballot will include one high school trustee (currently held by Aileen Couch) and two elementary district trustee (currently held by Judy Bricker and Jay Springer) positions up for election. Citizens interested in running for the school board must pick up a petition in the clerk's office at Robins School, complete it, and file the petition by March 23, 2000, to be included on the ballot. If you are interested in running, please call Zella Witter at 265-4356 and she can give you the information you need.

Reduced enrollment and increasing costs are a challenge for all of us in Montana. The commitment of our team at Havre Public Schools to provide the very best opportunities for the children of our community is stronger than ever. I am optimistic, as always, that by working together we will develop the very best plan for the 2000-01 school year. Your support is appreciated!
