The Havre High Academic Challenge 2000 wrapped up at 3:30 Friday afternoon at the HHS auditorium.

Reuben Wassmann's team, including Thea Maristuen, Lisa Wagner and Maria Gilleece, defeated Tom Billingsley's team, including Jesse Suek, Chris Young and Nick Newell, in the double elimination finals round robin of the event.

Tyler Bebee's team, including Landon Grant, Brent Finneman and David Heberly, took third.

The competition began Thursday at 7 p.m. with 24 four-man teams. The teams competed in a single elimination round, with the first team to correctly answer five questions in a variety of academic areas advancing to Friday's competition.

The 12 teams Friday competed in 7-minute rounds, with the team with the highest score advancing to the next round.

Once there were only three teams left, they began double elimination competition in 10-minute rounds. Wassmann's team defeated Bebee's in the first round of the finals, then Billingsley's team defeated them.

The Wassmann and Billingsley teams then split the next two rounds, forcing a third match with Wassmann's team victorious.

The members of Wassmann's team each received a plaque for their victory in the challenge.

Mary Wagner, who coordinated the event with Jane Hedstrom, asked the teams the questions. Sam Soyer kept score.

A timer was used for each round, with switches for each team member to turn on a light to be recognized for giving answers to the questions.
