Timely Trio and Marge Holt hold a concert April 16

By Tim Leeds

Timely Trio and Marge Holt will perform a concert at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 16, at the Montana State University-Northern Student Union Ballroom.

The concert follows an international dinner at 4 p.m., which is already sold out. The concert is being sponsored by the Northern Showcase, and is an additional feature from the regular season events.

Kim Callahan, Mavis Filler and Dena Tippets have been performing together as Timely Trio since 1983. Holt has been playing piano for the group for about four years. Callahan moved to Dickinson, N.D., shortly after writing "The Havre Song" in 1986, but the group still gets together to perform.

"Kim is usually preparing a song on the way to the performance," Filler said. "Once we get there we have to learn it rather quickly."

Holt, an accomplished pianist and graduate of the Royal College of Music in England, has taught piano, guitar and violin in Havre for more than 20 years.

Timely Trio recently completed its third album, "Livin' on the Western Edge," which includes songs about Fort Assiniboine, the Missouri River and the Eye of the Needle. The CD and their three and Holt's two tapes will be available for sale at the concert.

Callahan said they will be performing a lot of new songs people haven't heard yet, including songs of geographic and historical significance to the area.

Filler said the group likes to sing at conventions and conferences. Their upcoming schedule includes the 24th Annual Fort Benton Celebration on June 17 and 18, the Old Forts Trail Celebration at Fort Assiniboine on June 24, the Arts on the Prairie open air concert at Dickinson, N.D., on July 18, Havre Festival Days on Sept. 17, and the MACO Convention in Havre on September 24.

Tippets said they will be doing some new things at the concert.

"Kim's going to be tap dancing, which is new," she said.

"It's going to be a fun concert," Callahan said. "We aren't getting any younger. There are a lot of people in Havre we'd like to see us perform, and we don't know how much longer we'll be able to do this."

Proceeds from the ticket sales for the event will go to fund a graduation party for the International Club.

Filler, who advises the club, said 10 of the club's 13 members are graduating this spring, so they wanted to do something special to celebrate.

"We've never had this many graduate before," she said.

Filler said members of the club have many of the same problems. She said they're so far from home, if any feel homesick there isn't much they can do.

She said finding work is difficult, since they can't get work permits as foreign students and have to receive special dispensation to get jobs off campus. They also can't receive work study, since they aren't U.S. citizens, so finding work on campus can also be difficult.

Filler said some of the student's families will be here for the graduation, and they're planning a major event for them and the students. She said they will hold a potluck supper, with lots of entertainment and fun.

Tickets for the concert are $5 each, $2.50 for MSU-Northern students. The tickets can be purchased from Denise Brewer at the Information Desk in the Student Union Building, from Filler at the Student Affairs Office in Cowan Hall, or from Cavaliers at 321 Third St. in downtown Havre.
