The boys of summer are back

By Tiffany L. Rehbein

On a rare sun-filled day at Legion Field, the Havre Comets kicked off the summer baseball league by splitting games with the Great Falls Stallions on Sunday.

The Comets, the "B" team to the defending state champion Northstars, dropped the first game of the doubleheader 8-7, but won the second by a rousing 10-3.

In the second game, the Comets scattered 13 hits, including scoring four runs in the first and fourth innings en route to the win.

Danny Wirtzberger and C.J. Reichelt each had a triple in the win.

Wirtzberger went 2-for-3 from the plate, while Reichelt went 2-for-4.

Garret Hanson went 2-for-2.

Wirtzberger, David Knight, and Jared Boyce pitched two innings apiece, while Dan Danielson threw one inning.

Knight notched five strikeouts from the mound.

The Comets opened the game with lead-off hitter Wirtzberger connecting on his triple to centerfield. Jordan Anderson singled to bring him home.

The Comets scored four runs on just two hits in the inning.

The fourth inning fared just as well with Kyle Sheppard getting to third base on a Stallions error.

Hanson, Reichelt, and Jay Rucinsky each tabulated a hit and each scored in the inning.

In the opening game, Wirtzberger went 3-for-3 from the plate to lead the Comets.

Doug Ireland, Kyle Fanning, and Eric Lipp each went 1-for-4 in the effort.

Wirtzberger got the win in the second game, while Lipp got the loss in the first game.
