The Northern Division has been filled with heated competition all year, and the track season appears to be no different.
The Chester Coyotes' boys' and girls' track and field teams placed third and second, respectively, at the Sunburst Invitational on Saturday.
Colt Diemert led the Coyote boys with a first-place finish in the 800-meter with a time of 2:21.49. The Chester boys finished with 78 team points.
Chester dominated the 800, taking four of the top five spots. Sean Weinert was second (2:22.96), Cory Gagnon was fourth (2:26.29), and Jeff Martin was fifth (2:27.71).
Zeb Engstrom of Chester placed first in the 110 hurdles, finishing in 16.85. He was fifth in the javelin with a toss of 12710. He was also third in the discus with a throw of 1054.
The J-I Rams boys' team put together a good meet, finishing fourth with 75 points.
Curtis May placed second in the 110 hurdles, clocking in at 17.48.
J-I's Joe Svernum placed second in the 3,200 with a time of 12:17.67. He was also second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:21.92.
Jeremy May, Curt Lineweaver, and Eric Sundgren placed fourth (25.96), fifth (27.19), and sixth (28.73), respectively, in the 200-meter dash.
Blue Sky finished with 32 points on the boys' side. Mitchell McKinley placed second in the 400 with a time of 59.29 to pace the Eagles. Keenan Toner finished second in the javelin with a toss of 1374.
The Chester girls' team placed five athletes in No. 1 spots.
Michele Van Dyke, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, placed first in the high jump (50), 800 (2:51.34), and the 400 (72.12). She placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 306.
Emily Tranberg placed first in the 100 with a time of 14.51. She was followed across the line by teammate Julie Martin in 14.53.
Martin won the 200 with a time of 32.19. She was second in the long jump at 1411 and fourth in the triple jump at 301.
The Coyotes finished with 90 team points.
Blue Sky and J-I finished fifth and sixth with 46 and 30 points, respectively.
Natalie Strissel placed first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 54.31 for Blue Sky. She was fourth in the 110 hurdles in 18.19 and fourth in the long jump with a leap of 1311 1/2.
J-I's Angela Peek placed first in the discus with a throw of 989. She was also first in the shot put with a toss of 3011 1/2.
