Havre Blue Pony golfers compete at Laurel, Conrad

For the first time all season, the Havre Blue Ponies will golf with a full team, which has head coach Keith Evenson pretty excited.

"We will get to see some (Class) A schools that we haven't seen yet," Evenson said. "With our full team, it should be pretty good competition."

The Blue Ponies' varsity team will compete at Laurel Friday and Conrad Saturday. The Laurel boys are the defending State A champion, however, they lost the bulk of their team to graduation. But the unknowns at Laurel have the Havre team on its toes.

"I think it makes us a little more cautious," Evenson said.

The powerful sophomore squad from Havre Nick Obie, Jason Johnstone, Troy Toner, Kevin Harada, and Kyle Sheppard are all returners from a team who finished third at state last season.

Billings Central, who boasts a girls' team that finished second at state last season, should also compete at Laurel.

"It will be good for us to see new faces and some new teams," Evenson said.

Lisa Wagner, Jessica Sande, Jenni Solomon, Julie Wagner, and Katie Miller will compete for the Havre girls.

The Ponies were last on the course last Thursday, with a reschedule of the Havre Invitational. The boys won the tournament and the girls placed third at the meet.

The Havre boys placed four Blue Ponies Obie, Johnstone, Harada, Toner in the top 10 last week, while the Wagner girls both placed in the top 10 on the girls' side. Sophomore Julie Wagner was participating in her first varsity tournament, firing a 110 for a sixth-place finish.
