To add or not to add ...

The Havre Public School Board of Trustees will take action on Tuesday in the consideration of adding activities at Havre High School.

Boys' and girls' soccer, boys' cross country, and girls' fast pitch are under consideration.

Superintendent Kirk Miller will make his recommendation based upon an in-depth review of each of the following areas:

Athletic Review Task Force final report

Public testimony

Legal requirements

Equity requirements

Finances

Declining enrollment

The task force was formed by Miller to review the possible addition or elimination of student athletic activities at Havre High.

In addition to the task force's work, a public meeting was held in December to hear the community members input.

Equity requirements are based upon the Ridgeway Agreement, which says that there must be at least as many girls' sports offered as boys' sports.

Because there are equal sports for boys and girls at Havre High at this time, in order to add boys' cross country a girls' sport would have to be added.

At the meeting last month, public support was voiced to add boys' cross country.

The meeting is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Havre Middle School auditorium.
