The Havre Jaycees' Shooters' Education organization is holding a spaghetti dinner and silent auction Thursday, June 29, at the National Guard Armory from 5 to 7 p.m.
The drawing for a raffle the organization has been selling tickets for will also be held at the dinner, as well as a 50-50 drawing. There are about 15 items in the silent auction, including a barbecue grill, a quilt and a hunting vest. The raffle is for a Remington Stainless 300 Ultra Mag Rifle, a gift basket and stained glass art.
The organization is trying to raise money to send a BB gun team to a national competition in Atlanta this fall. Michael Barton, Nathan Doll, Karrina Holt, Victor King, Frank and Sara Lippy and Tristan Verploegen qualified to compete at nationals during the state competition held at Laurel on April 15-16.
Meg Lippy, Frank and Sara's mother, said the group has been working pretty hard to raise enough funds for the trip. She said they have been holding garage sales, car washes, done yard work and more. Lippy said they would welcome more work or any donations to fund the trip.
The shooters' education is sponsored by the Havre Jaycees, which provides the instructors, textbooks and initial equipment. The participants fund repairs, new equipment, targets and ammunition for the BB guns.
The organization provides education on respect and gun safety, Lippy said. The program is open to children ages 8 to 15. They are taught gun safety, protocol and various shooting positions, and are tested on gun safety and accuracy in the use of their BB guns. Lippy said the same text is used for the program as is used for hunter's safety classes.
The national competition will be held Aug. 3-5. Lippy said the team will leave Aug. 2 and be back in Havre on Aug. 8.
