Doug Kallenberger used a fine showing at the state High School Finals Rodeo to tally enough points to win the year-end award in the saddle bronc riding event.
The senior, a recent graduate on the Havre High School rodeo team, finished his final season with 186.78 points, and claimed his second-straight state saddle bronc title. Matt Mangis of Malta was second with 177.98 points.
During the short go-round at state, held at Miles City on Saturday, Kallenberger rode a 70 and placed first.
During the second go, he posted a first-place score of 72.
The first-place finish landed Kallenberger a spot on the state team and a trip to the high school national rodeo, to be held at Springfield, Ill., July 24-30.
Todd Owens of Havre rode to a fourth-place 53 during the short-go in the bareback event, which also qualified him for nationals. He finished the year in fourth place with 131.06 points.
The top four finishers per event qualify for the national rodeo.
Will Haugen of Chinook posted a two-ride average of 64-76 in the bareback riding event. He finished second in the average round behind Tony Nordahl of Helena with 172.57 points.
During the first go-round, Denali Solomon posted a sixth-place finish in the pole bending competition and a fourth-place mark in the barrel race.
The senior had a time of 21.0 in the poles and 17.92 in the barrels.
During the short go, Solomon posted a third-place time of 17.92 in the barrels.
Solomon had a time of 21.03 in the poles during the second go.
She finished the season with a year-end total of 243.25 points and finished fifth in the state.
Clinton Pankratz of Chinook placed fourth in the saddle bronc at state with a score of 58.
Morgan Strauser of Chinook placed fourth in the steer wrestling competition with a time of 18.10 in the average round.
Chinook's Jacob Brown finished the year in fifth place with 71.11 points.
