ROCKY BOY Extreme fire conditions posted at Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation last week didn't seem to dampen anyone's enthusiasm during the weekend powwow.
The hallmark of Rocky Boy's 36th Annual Pow-Wow Celebration may well have been the pleasant weather and the high caliber performances in the dancing and singing competitions.
The event encompassing five grand entries, competitions, specials and giveaways from Friday through late Sunday night also featured fine fare and keepsake sales. Most popular among the thousands of dancers, singers, families and fans who attended powwow appeared to be water, soda pop and Indian tacos. Vendors also moved a lot of dream catchers, jewelry items and leather goods, along with T-shirts, caps and other more contemporary items.
Dancers from throughout the western United States and Canada attended the powwow and put on wonderful performances throughout the weekend. For their troubles, the top dancers shared in a total of $44,950 in dance payouts.
The adult dancers earned $1,200, $700, $400, $200 or $100 for finishing first, second, third, fourth or fifth in their chosen categories. Teen dancers earned $500, $400, $300, $200 or $100 for their places between first and fifth, while the junior dancers earned $300, $200, $100, $75 or $50 for their efforts.
