Welcome, Dr. Gamble, to MSU

By HDN Staff

We would like to welcome Dr. Geoffrey Gamble to Montana State University, and wish him well in his endeavors.

Gamble, who will assume the leadership of the university in December, has already started visiting the campuses and has expressed some laudable intents when he starts leadership.

Gamble said he wants to better define what the university is and what roles the different campuses play, that he wants to prove the accountability and worth of the programs, and to increase cooperation between the campuses and between MSU and the University of Montana.

All of these are excellent goals.

He said he has great faith in the capabilities of MSU-Northern's new chancellor, Dr. Alex Capdeville, and will work closely with him to strengthen the institution.

Gamble said he will seek additional funding for the university, both from the state and from other sources. He said he realizes that the funds available from the state are limited, and he will need to be able to justify any increases he seeks there.

Gamble's stated intentions are realistic and well-directed. We applaud his goals and the intentions behind them.

hese are difficult times for the university. Enrollments have been down on some campuses, budgeting is difficult and students are becoming harder and harder to attract. Gamble's goals address much of the difficulties, and we hope for his success in meeting them.
