THEODORE HEBERLY
Theodore Tilden "Ted" Heberly, 81, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000 at a Havre hospital of natural causes. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000 at the St. Mark's Episcopal Church with Father Kenn Green officiating. A fellowship luncheon to follow the service at the church. The family will hold a private internment at a later date.
Heberly was born Sept. 6, 1919 to Samuel Tilden Heberly and Eula (Clark) Heberly in Great Falls. He was raised in Fort Shaw, graduated from Fort Shaw High School, and attended MSU-Bozeman, graduating in 1941 as an electrical engineer.
Two weeks after graduation on June 14, 1941, he married Margaret Hall in Fort Shaw. The couple moved to Schenectady, N.Y so he could work for the headquarters at General Electric. The family then transferred to San Francisco. during the war so that Heberly could maintain General Electric turbines for the Navy. After the war, the family moved to Montana.
In 1953 he developed Heberly Engineering, a consulting engineering firm in Havre after working for Margaret's father and Hill County R.E.A.
Heberly's big interest was education, serving on the local School Board for nine years, eight years as chairman. He was also on the State Board of Regents for seven years and a life member of the Elks, the Rotary Club, a Mason, and a Shriner.
Heberly served on the hospital board, was a Lifetime Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, spending his professional career bringing electricity, telephone, and television to rural families. He helped keep the old equipment working at St. Mark's Church. He maintained the old furnace and the old organ. He also served many years on the Vestry and was a good friend to many of the clergy.
After he retired, Heberly and his wife spent their winters playing golf in Arizona, but returning to Havre every spring. The couple enjoyed traveling and dancing. His interest as an engineer continued as he mastered the computer in retirement.
Heberly is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret of Havre; sons, John of Helena, and Jim of Havre; daughter JoAnne Heberly of Lewiston, Idaho; sister Mary Trovatten of Great Falls; and several nieces and nephews, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials in Heberly's honor may be made to North Star's Legion Baseball Field Lighting Fund in Havre.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.
